I created Emily's Michigan Book as part of a senior thesis project at Wellesley College in early 2005. The book is a narrative of prints that reflects on a childhood trip to Mackinac Island in
Michigan
When I was seven, my family packed into our blue Volvo station wagon and drove Up North for a week of requisite tourist activities
. A diary that I kept during the trip is the most complete account of anything that I have ever kept; all subsequent efforts to sustain such a detailed account of daily life have fizzled, and so I treasure that old diary.
I returned to
Mackinac Island in the summer of 2004. The confectioners, ferry rides, and historic home tours still brought a smile to my face, even though I was no longer a naive young seven year old. I knew that the rundown neighborhood behind the ferry docks housed an underpaid seasonal workforce, and that the abundance of fudge shops was not a natural phenomenon.
